In order to keep their skills current, candidates from Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority under took a 1 day Lantra Awards integrated training and assessment course in forward tipping dumpers. This refresher course covered the following areas of machine operation.
• Familiarity with the manufacturer’s handbook
• Stability
• Accident prevention
• Pre-shift and daily checks
• Site safety
• Starting and stopping
• Operating the machine
• Advanced operations, including operating on slopes
• Transportation.

4 candidates from Pembrokeshire undertook training in Tree Climbing, Aerial Rescue & Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness. Lantra Awards instructor James Archer delivered the course, which was held near Cardigan. This week long Lantra Awards course is designed to prepare candidates for NPTC City and Guilds assessment in units CS38 & CS39, which forms part of NPTC Chainsaw and Related Operations suite of qualifications.
This suite of qualifications in Chainsaws and Related Operations offers a range of practical assessments covering all aspects of chainsaw work. The core units CS30.1 and CS30.2 cover maintenance of the saw including recognition of safety features, chain sharpening, engine care and basic crosscutting material. The subsequent units CS31-48 build up in complexity through felling of various sizes of tree or utility poles, pruning operations form within the tree canopy, dealing with windblown trees and dismantling. The NPTC chainsaw qualifications are recognised in the HSE guidance as being the appropriate qualification route for professional chainsaw users.

YFC members from various Pembrokeshire clubs undertook Lantra Awards ATV training in preparation for their annual Rally competition. PMR training provided courses over 4 days for 15 YFC members at Wood Park Farm. The Instructors used were Morley Jones and Richard James. This 3 day Lantra Awards approved course has been designed especially for the herdsman to gain experience in the 5 step Dutch trimming method so that they can trim their own herd of cows proficiently. Acquire the practical skill to trim your cow’s feet to both prevent and cure lameness, leading to better cow welfare and higher farm profits. Courses are taught by fully qualified instructors using the ‘Dutch Trimming Method’. All Instructors have undergone the Dutch training to instructor level and are either from the Dutch College or one of the few from the UK who have attained their ‘Instructors’ qualification.
